The Center for ReSource Conservation held their annual Boulder Tour of Solar and Green Built Homes last weekend. Though we we’re only able to visit three of the 13 private homes that opened their doors to the public, we managed to find our dream home just 20 minutes west of Boulder.

Karel & Alice Starek have built a one-of-a-kind home through the principal of “thoughtful design through slow architecture”. In other words, the former inn keepers have built a home that combines the beauty of the surrounding ecosystem and skills of the local community in a ever-evolving art project they call home. The result is a home of artistic expression blended with sustainable design.

Passive solar design, a solar thermal system for hot water & heating, radiant floor heating, custom-designed windows with heat-mirror glazing, a very green roof, day lighting CFLs, Cempo blocks, locally harvested quartz countertops, Energy Star appliances including a glass-door fridge, low-flow toilets and a recycled copper roof are just a few of the green features.
The couple also chooses to avoid many modern conveniences. Food is prepared from scratch with fruit, herbs and flowers coming from their greenhouse, laundry is line-dried, they have no microwave oven, no TV and use an old fashioned English gas range.

The end result is an awe inspiring structure of life full of stories and meaning growing in every nook and cranny.

ボールダーはすっかり秋。ロッキーマウンテンでは紅葉が始まりました。

昨日、お世話になっている方（以下、「隊長」）に松茸狩りに連れて行っていただきました。ダウンタウンから４５分のドライヴ。山々のマイナスイオンを胸いっぱい吸い込んでこの地に暮らす幸せを感じます。

日本の松茸はブラウン松茸マッシュルーム、コロラドの松茸はホワイト松茸マッシュルームと呼ばれ、色こそ違いますが、香り食感共に日本のものに劣りません。

ベテランの方はそれぞれ自分のスポットを持っていて、標識もないロッキーの山の中を自分の庭のように進んでいきます。ポータブルのGPSを持参して山の奥深く入っても迷うことがありません。

まず、松茸狩りの心得を隊長から学びます。

1. 黄色やオレンジ、赤などの目立つ色を身につけて山に入る。
2. 松茸を掘ったら胞子は全て地面に落とし、地面はもとの通りに土を戻すこと。
3. 必要な分だけとること。
4. 道中ゴミ拾いも忘れない。

隊長はベテランなので、かすかに膨らんだ地面を的確に発見し、みんなにお裾分けをくれます。私は初心者なので普通のキノコとの見分けがつかず、掘っては嗅ぎ、掘っては嗅ぎの繰り返し（笑）。松茸の香りだけが頼りです。中には傘の部分が直径１５cmを超える物もありました！

充実の午前中を過ごし、全てのパワーを使い果たした私は、ロッキーの山並みを眺めながら湖の畔で昼食を美味しく頂きました。

さあ、帰宅か、と思った矢先、隊長が「次の山いくぞ」と一言。 すっかりペース配分を間違えた私は最後の気力を振り絞り（笑）、新たな山へと入るのでした。不思議なことに松茸を探していると疲れも吹き飛びます。途中、荷物置き忘れなどのアクシデントもありましたが無事見つかり、袋いっぱいの松茸を収穫し、大満足！

家に帰り松茸についた土を歯ブラシを使って丁寧に落とし、新聞紙にくるんで冷蔵庫へ。水で洗うと日保ちが悪くなるので。今夜は松茸のバターソテー？松茸ご飯？！

とても楽しい一日でした。松茸狩り、癖になりそうです。

この夏、あるご縁で特定非営利活動法人（ NPO ）ローハスクラブさんのLOHAS コンシェルジェ養成プログラムのお手伝いをさせていただきました。ローハス文化発祥の地、このボールダーでの研修に同行しました。

　

コロラド州ボールダーという街で私たちは暮らしているわけですが、ローハスという言葉を意識せずにローハスカルチャーを根付かせているこの街自体の成り立ちに改めて強い興味を持ちました。

ボールダーという街は、環境問題に取り組むことと、豊かな現代生活を営むことの両立に成功したことで知られています。広大なオープンスペースとロッキーマウンテン国立公園に守られてこの街は息づいています。「ボールダーの周囲を現実が取り囲んでいる」としばしば形容されるユニークな街です。それほどこの街は理想的で非現実的ですらあるライフスタイルを可能にしています。車の移動で発生する排気ガスを減らすため町中に自転車道が廻り、町中に地産地消を推進するオーガニック企業がひしめいています。

ボールダーのPRはまた後日に譲り、今日は今回研修で訪問したユニークな企業をご紹介します。

■Whole Foods Market

ご存知、オーガニックスーパーのWhole Foods Market。お洒落で美しく且つわかりやすい商品陳列は素晴らしく、手軽でヘルシーな総菜コーナーにはいつもお世話になっています。訪れる人のほとんどが自分の買物袋を持参しており脱帽です。（http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com）

■Colorado University
ボールダーはこの大学を中心に形成されています。最高学府の学び舎にふさわしいグリーンビルディングの数々。省エネ照明や水の不要なトイレの採用、賛同する学生の寄付を建設費用にあてるなど小さな取り組みの数々に感銘を受けた。また、校舎だけでなく、キャンパス内の緑化や色彩の統一など、美観保持の観点からも一見の価値があった。今後、新たに建設される校舎全てがグリーンビルディングとなる予定。（http://www.colorado.edu）

■NAU

オーガニックコットンのような再生可能なナチュラルファイバーを使ったアウトドアクローズのお店。かつてナイキやPatagoniaの上層部で働いていた人々によって運営されている。

各ストアにて実際の商品を手に取ってみることができ、ウェブを通じて商品を注文する「ウェブフロントストア」という方式を採用している。ウェブを通じて商品を注文すると定価の１０％引きで購入できる。

このシステムによると、まず店舗を拡大せずに済み、商品を倉庫から顧客に直接配送することでカーボンフットプリントを少なくできる。また、売り上げの５％は顧客が自分で選んだ団体へチャリティとして寄付できる仕組み。過剰包装及び過剰装飾の否定、LEEDサティフィケートの取得、環境保護団体への利益還元など学ぶべきことが多かった。（https://www.nau.com）

■Pharmaca

代替医療に注目した薬局。とにかく豊富なナチュラルサプリメントや薬に圧倒された。ホメオパシー専門家もいてアドバイスしてくれる。（http://www.pharmaca.com）

■Eco Cycle

ゴミリサイクルセンター。日々の生活に直結する問題だけに、時間を忘れて見学した。日本よりもおおざっぱな分別に最初はびっくり。「いたずらに難解煩雑な分別を市民に押し付けず、まずはみんながリサイクルセンターにゴミを持ち込みやすい環境を」という考え方に感心しました。（http://www.ecocycle.org）

■Abbondanza Farm

オーガニックな種を栽培し、そこからオーガニックな野菜を作るという農場。冷蔵庫も使用せず、木陰を天然の保管所兼作業場にしていた。その場で齧らせてもらったレタスの甘いこと甘いこと！ファームの説明をしてくれたリチャードさんのオーガニックシーズに対する情熱に感動した。商業主義でない姿勢も心を和ませてくれた。（http://www.eatabbo.org）

■Haystack Farm

汚染されていない土壌でオーガニック飼料を与えて大事に大事に山羊を育てる牧場。その山羊からとれたミルクで作ったチーズは絶品。牛のミルクから作るチーズよりもカロリーが低く、そして栄養価も高い優れもの。（http://www.haystackgoatcheese.com）

■Celestial Seasonings

世界的に有名なオーガニックティーカンパニー。この会社が今のボールダーのオーガニック業界の基礎となったというのは感慨深い。ここから排出された人材が、次々と新しいオーガニック食品会社を設立し活躍してるという点が見逃せない。（http://www.celestialseasonings.com）

■Pangea Organic Soap

オーガニックオイルを使用した石鹸を製造する会社。使用成分や、パッケージに関する企業秘密をあっさりと公開する姿勢に大きな好感を持った。企業信頼性というものの大切さに思いが及んだ。また、従業員を大切にする企業姿勢、事務所内に流れるリラックスした雰囲気など直接利益に関わりないところへの配慮が素晴らしい。（http://www.pangeaorganics.com）

Earlier this week I helped translate for a wonderful organization in Denver called Alliance For Sustainable Colorado. A group of 35 business professionals from Japan’s largest hypermarket, JUSCO, came to Colorado to learn about green business and volunteerism. Alliance asked me to help out with interpretation during the group’s tour of the building.

The historical six story building was originally built as a warehouse in 1908. Three years ago Alliance purchased the building and using modern green materials as well as keeping as much of the original building structure as possible has received both a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification for Existing Buildings and a LEED Silver Certification for Commercial Interiors. Recycled furniture, self dimming super-efficient lighting, low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) carpeting that can be replaced tile by tile and uses a TacTile ‘grabbing’ system which avoids the use of toxic glue, water free urinals and wall insulation made of old blue jeans are just a few of the innovative materials and resources used in the building.

Social sustainability was thought out too by the Alliance and includes centralized mail boxes to increase social interaction, a shared services program that utilizes shared phone systems, internet, photocopier, printers, meeting rooms (both for tenants and non-tenants) and lunch room. Most of the tenants comprise of NPOs ranging from animal rights to the rights of the blind. The philosophy is together they can make a bigger change than going at it alone. Further, the center is a short bike ride from the state capital.

Overall, the hour tour went very well and with the help of another interpreter, we were able to discuss new ideas and concepts with JUSCO members. The tour concluded with an exchange of gifts, re-usable shopping bags for them and decorative chopsticks and silk table clothes for us. A quick picture was taken before the group was on their way to another tour.

Some things, such as automatic light sensors, water faucets and low flush toilets are common in Japan. However, concepts such as single stream recycling, environmentally friendly cleaning products and muffled dividers and ceiling tiles to dampen noise pollution were relatively new ideas to the group. Some innovations are concepts that once or still are long rooted traditions. For example, the versatile bamboo has been used for a wide range of things in Japan for thousands of years. Tatami (woven straw floor mats) are still common in Japanese homes. No glue is used to lay tatami mats and are replaceable mat by mat. Unfortunately, many of these sustainable building materials are being replaced in Japan by “modern” building practices. If we look back to our own history and further back in Japan’s history, we’re sure to find an abundance of other sustainable practices that have long been buried and are now ready to be recycled.
